Juiced.GS to publish in 2020

JULY 19, 2019 — LEOMINSTER, MA — Juiced.GS, the world’s last and longest-running Apple II print publication, will publish its twenty-fifth volume (issues #97–100) in 2020.

“We’ve enjoyed a lot of milestones over the years: our 1,000th article, our first full-color covers, a septupling of our subscriber base, and more,” said editor and publisher Ken Gagne. “As we close in on our first quarter in publication and our one-hundredth issue, it was a no-brainer that we’d remain in publication through that landmark — and likely beyond!”

Juiced.GS will publish four quarterly print issues in 2020 at the same prices as in 2019: $20 for customers in the United States, $25 in Canada and Mexico, and $28 for international.

Subscriptions and renewals for 2020 are available immediately. Customers who have previously purchased a subscription that automatically renews need to do nothing; their accounts will be charged on January 1. (An active subscription status can be verified by logging into one’s online account.)

Apple II enthusiasts who are curious about Juiced.GS can subscribe to the free email newsletter to receive a free sample issue with twenty pages of content from the past six years of the magazine.

To commemorate the announcement of Juiced.GS‘s first quarter in publication, editor Ken Gagne debuted Juiced.GS Dark Mode, a limited print run of two issues with inverted colors. Tired of all that whitespace causing eye strain? All that glare keeping your partner up when reading in bed? Enjoy text on a black background, just like the monochrome monitors on which Juiced.GS is edited. This special edition sold out at KansasFest, though its popularity was noted as an indicator of consumer interest in other magazine variations currently being explored.

In the meantime, subscribers can look forward to the flagship product expanding in other ways. “Juiced.GS isn’t just unique; it’s important,” said associate editor Andy Molloy. “The Apple II is growing not just in software and hardware, but in users and enthusiasts. Juiced.GS continues to evolve to represent all these voices, passions, and products throughout the community.”

Juiced.GS to publish in 2019; new Concentrate PDFs

Best of Juiced.GS sample issue (2018)

JULY 20, 2018 — LEOMINSTER, MA — Juiced.GS, the world’s last and longest-running Apple II print publication, will publish its two-dozenth volume (issues #93–96) in 2019.

“We’ve always promised we’ll print Juiced.GS as long as there’s Apple II content to cover, writers to cover it, and readers to read it,” said publisher and editor-in-chief Ken Gagne. “In the past few years, those variables have evolved into constants. New Apple II products and developments happen every day, ensuring plenty of new material. Our stable of freelance writers has grown, representing the diverse voices in our community. And 90% of our subscribers have converted to automatic renewals, introduced in 2015. With so many retrocomputing enthusiasts looking forward to each issue of Juiced.GS, of course we’ll keep going!”

Juiced.GS will publish four quarterly print issues in 2019 at $20 for customers in the United States, $25 in Canada and Mexico, and $28 for international. These prices represent an increase of $1/year, or 25¢/issue — the first domestic rate change in nine years, and the first increase for all other subscribers in six years.

2019 subscriptions and renewals are available immediately. Customers who have previously purchased a subscription that automatically renews need to do nothing; their accounts will be charged on January 1. (An active subscription status can be verified by logging into one’s online account.)

Apple II enthusiasts who are curious about Juiced.GS can subscribe to the email newsletter to receive a new, free sample issue with 20 pages of content from the past five years of the magazine.

Additionally, the line of Juiced.GS Concentrates is expanding for the first time in three years. These PDFs collect themed content from previous issues of Juiced.GS into one bundled file, marking the first time some of these articles have been released digitally. The new Concentrates cover five diverse topics:

  • BBS: Here’s everything you need to know about connecting to a telnet bulletin board system or even running your own, as well as a review of the WiModem232. It also includes a review of BBS: The Documentary and an interview with its creator, Jason Scott.
  • Education: The Apple II gained much of its fame in the classroom, where its effects can still be felt. This PDF is a reflection on the Apple II’s longevity in the classroom and how modern students respond to such classics as The Oregon Trail and VisiCalc, as well as how the Raspberry Pi might serve as a modern equivalent for teaching programming.
  • Raspberry Pi: This affordable microcomputer makes an excellent Apple II peripheral. An introduction to A2SERVER, a review of the Apple II Pi, how to use the Pi to run a BBS, and what today’s students could learn from the Pi round out this PDF.
  • Apple-1: The precursor to the Apple II, the Apple-1 is also alive and well. From replica models to soldering experiences to convention appearances, the Apple-1 is everywhere in this Concentrate.
  • The Oregon Trail: The seminal edutainment title has seen multiple adaptations over the years. This PDF reviews a theatrical play, a handheld game, and a card game; examines how today’s students interpret Oregon Trail; and also goes behind the scenes of Melissa Barron’s hack, 73H 0r3g0n 7r41L.

These PDFs are available immediately starting at $5, with more Concentrates to come later in 2018.

Juiced.GS covers exciting new projects, interviews movers and shakers, and tells the stories of this amazing computer,” espoused associate editor Andy Molloy. “The Apple II is alive and well, and I love being part of this journey.”

Juicy apple (color)

JULY 21, 2017 — LEOMINSTER, MA — Juiced.GS, the world’s last and longest-running Apple II print publication, will inch closer to one hundred issues when it publishes its 23rd volume (issues #89–92) in 2018.

“KansasFest may have hit its capacity, but we’re growing to meet demand,” said publisher and editor-in-chief Ken Gagne. “We’re currently in our tenth consecutive year of growth, having quintupled our subscriber base from where it was in 2007. And with the automatic renewals we introduced last year, customer retention is the highest it’s ever been. We couldn’t ask for stronger confirmation the demand for and commitment to a print publication that serves the Apple II community — a need that we’re happy to fill in 2018 with issues #89–92.”

Juiced.GS will publish four quarterly print issues in 2018 at $19 for customers in the United States, $24 in Canada and Mexico, and $27 for international — prices that have remained constant since 2012 and only $1 more than what a 2003 subscription cost. 2018 subscriptions and renewals are available immediately. Customers who have previously purchased a subscription that automatically renews need to do nothing; their accounts will be charged on January 1. (An active subscription status can be verified by logging into one’s online account.)

Upcoming issues of Juiced.GS will include coverage of KansasFest 2017 and an interview with Garage Giveaway coordinators Sean Fahey and James Littlejohn; a tutorial on using and developing ampersand commands in Applesoft BASIC; reviews of Michael Packard’s game Alien Downpour and David L. Craddock’s book Breaking Out; a roundtable on how Patreon can be used support Apple II development efforts; and much, much more!

Juiced.GS continues in 2017

Juicy apple (color)

JULY 22, 2016 — KANSAS CITY, MO — Juiced.GS, the world’s last remaining and longest-running Apple II print publication, will live up to subscribers’ expectations by publishing its 22nd volume in 2017.

“For Juiced.GS to publish each year requires three components: writers, readers, and content,” reflected publisher and editor-in-chief Ken Gagne. “Our community is strong in all three: the submission policy we unveiled last July has introduced us to many new writers; the ‘automatic renewal’ feature we introduced last December has allowed subscribers to vote with their wallets for the continued existence of Juiced.GS; and we have so much content that, last September, we published our first-ever 28-page issue. Juiced.GS in 2017? How can we say no?”

Juiced.GS will publish four quarterly print issues in 2017 at $19 for customers in the United States, $24 in Canada and Mexico, and $27 for international. Subscriptions and renewals are available immediately.

Juiced.GS has continuously evolved to serve the Apple II community, introducing such innovations as full-color and variant covers, 5.25″ floppy disks, social media presences, and a relationship with vendor The Byte Works to sell Opus ][. All these offerings are in support of our mainstay: a quarterly magazine filled with original articles and features, including news, reviews, how-tos, and interviews.

Upcoming issues of Juiced.GS will include coverage of KansasFest 2016 and Apple II Festival France; reviews of the 4play and 4soniq expansion cards; programming tutorials from 6502 Workshop, the developers of Nox Archaist; a retrocomputing enthusiast’s guide to eBay; a review of accessibility tools and features for the Apple II; and much, much more!
